I finally figured out swapping bookmarks between pc's- yippee!

On the (really) downside I think I've misplaced some music. When I did my initial cursory check I thought it was all there but now, when looking for a song, I am so far unable to find a-e and I am having a mild panic (telling myself it's mild...*breathebreathebreathe*).

Off the beaten path...

Marcy was asking about people's favourite non traditional Christmas songs and these are mine:

Roger Whittaker- Darcy the Dragon (buy)

Nana Mouskouri- Old Toy Trains (buy)

And finally

Sarah McLachlan's Song for a Winter's Night mp3 (buy)

The first two are songs that I remember from childhood and still sing along to, loudly. They evoke those happy sort of Christmas memories of Santa gifts and nutmeg and snow and family and excitement and happiness.

Just a Silly Girl Sits Down (or how to concern your new friends)

A drive to the Emerald city on the back roads to view new scenery and have a more relaxing drive.

Find the U. District, park the car, roam about and check in. A bit of a doze may have occurred.

Bump into FiL, get directed to the pub and wander down to meet Colin. I got ID'd, passed over my license, was given raised brows by the doorman who told me I don't show my age (Yes! *air fist pump* ). Greet Colin and receive a hug from a new instant friend. Joined by Fil and beers all around.

We catch the bus downtown and join Juan at the Elysian. Beer flows, food is consumed and talking and laughter abound.

All full of belly, we make our way to the venue to see Deerhunter.

We wander to the floor and pick a spot. We all watch the opening band.

And then....

Standing in the dark room I felt my feet shuffle. Then I saw other peoples feet. Yes, I 'sat down'. My first thought was 'shit' and my next was 'where's my bag?' (passport in it). I quickly got up, beelined for the door and the next thing I remember is not feeling my bag, sensing someone behind me, touching me and someone else grabbing my arm.

The boys had followed me and were taking care of me and my weird case of blacking out. Apparently it was hard to find my pulse. And I was hot. We all went to the hall area which was near an open door. After about 5 minutes everything seemed to get brighter and I felt more normal, as normal as one can feel when they fell down.

I spent the rest of the evening propping up the bar just in case. Falling down put a bit of a damper on my night but the company more than made up for it.

Thanks you three for a great evening. Very good to meet you Juan and Colin after all this blogging time. And FiL, always good to see you.

I Claim the Ruby Slippers

I'm off to the Emerald city to meet with The Scarecrow, The Lion and The Tin Man.

I do believe there may be beer and music involved.

Bag is packed and I am out the door!

Just a Ride

Been here and done this before but....c'est la vie.

Instructions: Use your mp3 player set to random to answer the questions with random song titles.

What does next year have in store for me? "Arctic Breeze" Icebird (as in cool and calm or cold and bleak? [please be calm, please be calm...])

What does my love life look like? "How To Save a Life" The Fray (his or mine?)

What do I say when life gets hard? "Bad News" Eels (heh...and follow it up with 'suck it up you big baby')

What do I think of when I get up in the morning? "Going to Scotland" The Mountain Goats (well that is always a possibility)

What song will I dance to at my wedding? "Lolita" Stereophonics (ermmm...but i don't like really old, dirty men...oh, that's Nabokov)

What do I want to do for my career? "Dirty Business" The Dresden Dolls (bugger! the secret is out!!)

Favorite saying? "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" The Ramones (ha! right now it has more to do with poking eyes out actually)

Favorite place? "Wonderwall" Cat Power (sounds good to me)

What do I think of my parents? "The Presidents Dead" Okkervil River (nah nah! you are not the boss of me!)

Where would I go on a first date? "Rewind" Stereophonics (is that like a do over?) and since I already had the Stereophonics.... "Soul Meets Body" Death Cab for Cutie (hmmm, much better!)

Drug of choice? "The Only Difference Between Martydom and Suicide is Press Coverage" Panic! At the Disco (sounds about right)

How do I describe myself? "Treasure" Chapterhouse (i'm not that nice to myself. the player lies)
What is the thing I like doing most? "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues" Eels (and that makes no sense at all)

The song that best describes the president/prime minister? "Why are You Looking Grave?" Mew (the elections are over...for the moment)

What is my state of mind like at the moment? "Abacus" Fionn Regan (see...the thinking brain...adding and subtracting)

How will I die? "Takk" Sigur Ros (saying thanks it seems...maybe for the memories?)

Song they'll play at my funeral? "Portions for Foxes" Rilo Kiley (because I'll be food for the beasties)

What song will I put as the subject? "Just a Ride" Jem (and it is. just a little funny tidbit thing because the brain is broken)

And tags for everyone!

Juxtaposition: Thankful Boys and the Best Ass in the Business

Wednesday: Small, dark club. Less than 150 people in attendance, myself and FiL standing 5 people back from the stage, 4 Scottish boys playing fantastic music and being ever so surprised at the very enthusiastic Canadians.

Fabulous band. See them if you can.

Thursday: Huge stadium. A sold out crowd of about 50,000. One woman and her dancers putting on a show, a full on entertainment tour de force. She`s full of energy, plays the crowd masterfully and was adored by the crowd for it.

During Like a Prayer I spent the majority of the song watching the crowd because of their response; on their feet, dancing, jumping, waving their arms, shrieking and singing loudly.

(My friend and I were so in the nosebleeds but there is no way we would have paid more. Besides, we were there for the experience!)

I'll be twirling and swirling the day away here...

Thursday, June 19, 2008

I have a couple of friends that I'll call up every so often and tell them about a gig I think they'd enjoy. They really don't need my help or anything but every once and a while I manage to find a band they don't know about and so pass the information along.

This time it was Los Campesinos.

Parenthetical girls/ (((GRRRLS))) were the first opener and we only managed to catch their last song, a cover of OMD's Joan of Arc (Maid of Orleans). I'd have liked to have heard more of them, very earnest and sweet, but I was distracted by the singer's cheekbones and alabaster skin. He was beautiful and I am sure he makes all the girls jealous.

Next up was You Say Party! We Say Die!

This was the first time I have managed to see them live which is pretty pathetic as they are from here. I've heard a few of their songs before but hearing them on disc or vinyl is nothing in comparison to them live. The singer, as I mentioned to Juan, reminded me some of Siouxsie in her slinky, jerky movements and her stage presence. She had a brilliant connection with the crowd and drew them along with her.

YSPWSD and Los Campesinos toured in the UK last Fall and they seemed to have created a friendly bond. During each bands set the other band was invited on stage for a lovely, shouty, bouncy, smiley sing along; near impossible to not enjoy 12 people having so much fun together.

Los Campesinos took the stage, dealt with a few technical glitches and they got the room moving. Their music is poppy, peppy and bounce worthy. It sounds so positive and infectious yet lyrically they are rather dark and angsty. I wasn't disappointed at all especially since they played my favourite song, International Tweecore Underground (on the UK release but found last Fall on a blog- v. good to run to.).

Drink Up!

I did a weekend trot to bring people in need water and bettered my 10k by 6 minutes (I'm still darned slow though).

I've also discovered that Zazie's song, Je Suis Un Homme, is a great song to begin a race with. It shall be the go to song from now on (thanks to Scotsman for introducing me to her music).

Thanks FiL.

(I could have sworn I saw Spike from Degrassi there but FiL informed me the woman is part of the Vancouver scene.)

And the Oscars got it Right...

In amongst the sugary sweet musical confections on offer from the movie Enchanted this song, Falling Slowly from the Once soundtrack, won.

I've posted about it before.
It still gets me.

I have a tune in my head.
It is a real tune but I can't remember more than the bar running through my brain.
I have the words wrong but they fit.
"Poop shootin' scooby"

Hmm.

(Long blathering post in the works...)

Shonen Knife

One they didn't play.

Thanks FiL!

I was sent the soundtrack...

After being rather Debbie Downer-ish over the past week or so I found a pick me up.
It makes me smile.
And laugh.
I guess I revel in others hardships...

It Sucks to be Me

(When I saw this Gary Coleman was played by a girl and Kate said F*ck not shit; much more amusing!)

Where in Just a Girl actually stood up for herself

Wombat was writing recently about politeness and how overly polite Americans have become (and here I'd thought it was a Canadian thing).

When commenting I mentioned how I'd once been accused of thievery and that it was possibly a post in the making.
It was. Or is...

A long time ago, in a small Canadian town, Just a Girl was spending time at the mall with a friend. They were college aged and oh so cool (but not really) and just wandering about looking at things. They went to the music store, Sam's, and were flipping through the bins and comparing finds. The friend asked JaG to hold her wallet and proceeded to pass it over the shelves. Upon receiving it JaG placed it in the pocket of her army jacket. They made some purchases and moved on.

Unbeknownst to them they had had an observer.

While walking and giggling down the main mall corridor they were approached by two men:

"Excuse me ladies, I need to speak to you. We are with mall security."

The girls stopped and were feeling a bit bewildered. Maybe one of them had dropped something?

"I need you to empty your pockets."

"What? Why? We don't understand."

"Someone saw you shoplifting"

*silence*

Then JaG got upset. She politely spouted off about never stealing as she emptied her pockets and bags. She tossed her receipts at the men and stumbled over her words. Since there was nothing to find the men soon left but not before saying:

"Sorry to bother you."

The two girls made their way to the parking garage where JaG broke down and cried due to anger and embarrassment. Then she stiffened her lip, grabbed her purchases and went back to the music shop. The clerk was politely given what for, the music was returned and JaG told them she would never shop there again. The clerk was baffled but returned her money.

Once back at the car JaG shed a few more tears then drove to her grandparents place. Once she'd calmed down she began to think more rationally about what had happened. She saw how unfair it was to be stopped in the middle of the mall. She wondered who reported them as shoplifters. She thought about calling the mall management.

She did. She called and explained what had happened and the consequences for the store. Management had no idea what she was talking about but promised to look into it and call her back. Jag believed that she would not hear back. She was wrong.

After about an hour management called back to explain what they had found out. A clerk from another shop in the mall was on her lunch break in the food court which was situated right outside the music shop. The clerk observed JaG's friend passing over her wallet and JaG pocketing it. The clerk decided they'd stolen some music and so went back to her shop, talked to her shop's security and sent them out to hunt down the girls.

An apology was offered and accepted though JaG informed management that this situation would still cost the music shop their customer and that she had no plans to patronize the rest of the mall either.

(I am still surprised about how calm I was during it all. I never yelled and felt that I remained fairy rational throughout it all. Now I would challenge the security guard more instead of just emptying out my pockets but otherwise not much would change.)

Ranty and Some Music

To the butthead of a bartender at Dick's on Tuesday night (yeah you in the red Abercrombie T)...

What the hell? Why wouldn't you give me a glass of water?

Do you not like brunettes? Maybe you though I had a horse face? Possible I wasn't showing enough boob to please you?

You said that you guys don't do glasses of water only (50 cent) bottles which you sell for $3.50 a pop. I then observed, and overheard you serve other girls glasses of water.

Ass.

I went to see Fujiya & Miyagi at Richard's and ended up shaking what my momma gave me. I'd say the majority of the room was 19-20 so I felt a wee bit old but, once the music started, I got myself out to the floor and found the dancer within. I had moments where I felt silly but at those times I just hid in my hair and giggled before getting back to the shimmy.

I ended up quite liking the show. I have to admit I was unsure how they'd be live but was pleasantly surprised to find myself quite entertained. The lead guitarist/vocalist was so very solemn and that cracked me up to no end. When he finally did smile at someone being silly he seemed to relax and continued on grinning for the rest of the set. The bass player was opposite as he never stopped smiling; if his mouth was not curved in a grin his eyes were still sparkling.

(Guess what Colin. I got CD's in the mail today; just to make it a very good post week indeed.)

As I was heading out this evening I looked up at the sky to admire the stars and noticed what looked like fire works. I took a better look and realized that it was sparks coming out of the neighbours chimney; many sparks. I watched for a few more seconds and saw that even though the majority of the sparks and embers where going upwards I could see a few land on the roof.

I stood and had a momentary inner struggle; Do I knock the door? They scare me. It's rained the past few days and should be fine. They have kids. What would I want someone to do if it was me?

So I walked to the door, took a big breath and knocked. A little blond girl* (9 or 10) answered and when I asked for her mom or dad she told me her mom was at work and her dad lived in a different town. Ack. Now what? I rambled something about the fireplace ans she said I should go to the other door and try them. I wandered over to where I thought it was and couldn't find it right away (it was dark there!) but managed to find it in the end. After introducing myself I explained my reason for bothering her** and she came out to have a look. After a cursory glance she said "Well this might get me a visit from a cute fireman anyway", shrugged and went back inside.

I stood in the drive for a moment that headed off.

*I think she needs some instruction on strange danger. I know I'm safe but what about the next person? She is a very pretty little thing.
** I've never met her before but boy have I heard her; yelling and swearing loudly on numerous occasions. She's seems a bit rough and ready for a fight and I find her intimidating. I sure she's actually quite nice. Or not.
